The Annandale Estates fishing is situated around Johnstone Bridge on the upper part of the River Annan.
The beat is some 5.5 miles long and has approximately 10 named pools. Much of the fishing is set in amongst picturesque mature woodlands and pastoral land. The river is relatively narrow on this beat and so responds best to anglers who can be very quiet in their approach to pools. Although on the upper part of the river the relative shortness of the River Annan means that fresh salmon and sea trout are caught here (occassionaly tide liced).
The best salmon fishing is to be had from September onwards on a falling river whilst sea trout will be present in good numbers from June onwards. Spring can be very good on this water for very large wild brown trout (fish of up to 5lb are not uncommon) and the winter months provide some excellent grayling fishing with fish up to 3 3/4lb having been caught in recent years.
Catches on this beat, in common with most of the Annan, have been steadily increasing for a few years despite the very light angling pressure that it receives. It is not uncommon for and angler to have the full 5.5 miles of the beat to themselves particulary during the earlier part of the season and on weekdays.
