Tay – Bolfracks

Bolfracks is one of the most productive beats on the Upper Tay and is an absolutely charming place to fish. It is subdivided into two single-bank beats, the Upper and Lower Beats which are fished on alternate days by the Bolfracks Syndicate and Day Ticket anglers. Day ticket anglers fish the Upper Beat on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays and the Lower Beat on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.

The beat is easily accessible and there is good car parking available. At the Point there is a basic fishing hut which is welcome in inclement weather. There is also a ghillie available, Bob MacIntyre, who has been on the beat since the 1960s and knows it like the back of his hand. Bob is also an expert spey caster and an excellent tutor. His services can be secured for additional cost. The Estate also has a number of charming cottages to rent which are ideal for the visiting angler.

Salmon may be caught on this beat right throughout the season. Spring salmon are regularly caught on the Upper Tay right at the start of the season but the first big run usually appears in May and June when lovely fresh salmon sprint right up from the tide heading for far away tributaries like the Lyon and the Dochart. Often these fish still carry sea-lice. Many of the biggest fish of the year however are caught in the autumn when the Point Pool especially can excel itself. There are regularly fish over 20 pounds caught on this beat.
