Like the other Galloway Rivers, the Bladnoch beats fish best following some rain and the Clugston water is no exception. Spring salmon can be caught from the start of the season but catches tend to improve as the water warms around April. Summer salmon into double figures are taken each year from July. Grilse are abundant from August onwards and large numbers of autumn salmon arrive in September and October.
All of the pools provide good holding water and there are some excellent sections of fly water. On Beats 1, 2 and 3 overhanging trees provide a good source of insects for the brown trout and most years fish of 4lb or more are caught.
The banksides are well maintained and access is easy with only a short walk to the river from dedicated car parking areas, just off the main road. There are two fishing huts for angler use, one at the top of the beat between the Junction and the Meetings and the other just downstream of Dyke End.
